What are we looking for in a breaker panel?
Lots of things really but here’s one of the more expensive items, the Federal Pacific or Stab-Loc breaker.
The problem with these is they have a higher risk of failure than other brands. This doesn’t mean you’re in immediate danger but many electrical contractors will suggest replacement. The Stab-Loc has a history of not tripping and overheating, some insurance companies may not even insure homes with this breaker installed.
Another concern is if you wish to update or add on your present home, replacement parts are available but expensive, in many cases a whole new panel is cheaper and safer. Don’t panic, the seller may agree to certify this electrical system or even agree to replace it. Even if they don’t when you have a home inspection your home inspector should at the least make you aware of this.
